A day in the life – Interview with Liam Jacobs, French Import Manager & Int’l Forwarding and Operations Agent by Chris Porter

I had the pleasure of speaking with Liam Jacobs, Kukla UK French Import Manager and International Forwarding and Operations Agent. In this interview, Liam talks about his role, the challenges he and his team have overcome, what he enjoys most about working at Kukla UK, and much more. So, let’s dive in!

Liam, first, tell us a little bit about yourself. What hobbies, interests, and favourite sports do you have?

I’m a dad of one to a 3-year-old boy called Freddie, and I am a big Arsenal fan. I like to play football and golf in my spare time, but most of all, on family days, we eat out.

What does your role as French Import Manager involve?

My role involves overseeing all aspects for clients and suppliers and planning orders for collection delivery. Part of the time is on customs work for import and export. I always spend some time getting involved with my team (in the photo from left to right Morgan Higgins, Liam Jacobs, Fabien Dufeutrel and Darren Allison) to ensure that we have smooth operations and that everything is running well.

What would you say are the key skills needed?

Certainly organisation skills, as well as forward-thinking, communication with our clients and supplier. Teamwork at all times to cover all basis.

Describe what a typical day looks like for you.

At 8 am, I arrive at the office, if not before, starting with a good cup of tea. Then I get into the action with updates, planning and customs procedures. My work involves working closely with our customs division due to the short nature and transit times from France to the UK.

What do you enjoy most about working at Kukla UK?

The family feeling we have here and the relaxed environment here at Kukla UK definitely help. From one day to the next, especially during the busier times, it helps to have that comfortable feel. The team spirit and atmosphere is always upbeat and positive.

Do you have any examples of challenges the team has faced and overcome during a typical day?

The short transit from France to the UK can sometimes be challenging, but with good organisation and comms with our planning and customs team, usually, this isn’t a concern. We are always fully prepared. Since the start of 2023, we have seen a few strikes from both countries, which can cause challenges. We re-route and proactively communicate to our clients if they are or might be impacted by it.

Have you learned anything new since you started working at Kukla UK?

The wine business was fairly new to me when I joined Kukla UK in June 2021, along with the added factor of Brexit. I have learnt a great deal about every aspect, but I would say most of all on the customs side. Excise goods are our speciality, and from working closely with Kukla Customs Division, we appreciate the clerks’ knowledge that they share with us.

What excites you the most about the work?

That end-of-the-day feeling that you have achieved. Both as a team, group and personally. Seeing our clients and suppliers happy is what we always strive for.
