Did you know…?

George Washington had a special recipe for eggnog

The festive eggnog has a rich history. Even if it dates back to medieval England, the American colonists popularised it and added rum. Even George Washington was known for his love of eggnog, and he had a special recipe that included eggs, brandy, whiskey, sherry and rum. The Old Farmer’s Almanac has shared Washington’s original recipe, which he is said to have penned himself sometime after 1789. The recipe calls for a quart of cream, milk, a dozen tablespoons of sugar, a pint of brandy, rye whiskey, Jamaica rum and a pint of sherry. The liquor is mixed first, and then the yolks and whites of 12 eggs are separated. The sugar is added to the beaten yolks, and the milk and cream are slowly beaten. The whites of the eggs are beaten until stiff and folded slowly into the mixture. The eggnog is left in a cool place for several days and tasted frequently. Those who have attempted to make Washington’s eggnog have reported that it is undoubtedly a fantastic drink.
