It comprises several smaller ports and harbours. It is an important port for the cruise sector as it offers bathing, marine and other shipping services.

Until the 19th century, it was a natural harbour. City bosses wanted to create a port that would help make the country a more effective trading nation. They hired British engineer Sir John Hawkshaw to design a new facility. Hawkshaw and his team started work on a four-dock complex in 1884 and it was finalised in 1897. Further work from 1911 saw the construction of a breakwater to the north and more space added for ships to berth and unload. The scheme opened in 1925 – making the city the biggest port in the southern hemisphere.

The port is situated on one of the world’s busiest trade routes and will always retain strategic and economic importance for that reason alone. It is also named the Cape of Storms, the Cape of Good Hope and the Mother City.

The Seaport powers nearly 40% of regional jobs. Port history spans a period of 165 years, which encompassed the Civil War, the Industrial Revolution, two World Wars and America’s coming of age as a global power. In the late 1960s, it was the first major port on the West Coast to build terminals for container ships, a revolutionary technology at the time. It then rose to become the second-largest container port in the world.

Clues: The busiest port on South America’s west coast, is located nearest the country’s capital, Santiago. Construction of the modern port began in 1910, but it was 1936 before the port had an electrical plant, new warehouses, housing for workers and facilities capable of handling large sea-going vessels. In 1985, an earthquake destroyed much of the harbour infrastructure and reconstruction began in 1992. Reconstruction was completed in 1997 after an investment of 23.5 billion US dollars, and the port re-opened for business in 1998. The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean identified the gateway in 2006 as the 8th major port in the region.
